Legal Advice Service

We’re not a substitute for a law firm, but we do try and assist members who need advice on matters connected to their engagement and work as a director.

We work with members on specific problems and questions that directors bring to us. These can include providing advice on contracts of engagement, copyright law and disagreements with production companies or commissioners. Sometimes this will constitute legal advice and sometimes just general advice based on our experiences of the sector. Although we’re not regulated by any legal services regulator we can provide certain types of legal advice. Any of our employees who are practising solicitors will be regulated by the Solicitors Regulatory Authority.

As a small organisation, we have to limit the amount of time we can spend advising any specific member. We try and avoid setting a rigid time limit and will exercise our discretion on a case by case basis.

In the event that a member requires specialist advice which is beyond the capability of our small team, we will try and suggest alternative sources of advice. We can only ever advise on English law.

We aim to respond substantively to members within one week of the query being submitted. If your query is time-critical, please do let us know, provide full details and we will endeavour to accommodate this.

Please note that we do not provide legal advice on broader film and TV production matters that go beyond the role of the director.
