The BBC’s Director General Matt Brittin has revealed that £80m in commissioning spend is to be cut across the BBC Content, Nations and News teams this year, with some programmes to be closed.

In response to this news, Directors UK CEO Andy Harrower said:

Cuts to BBC content and commissioning are a blow for UK directors, and to the industry. Fewer commissions mean fewer opportunities to tell bold, distinctive stories and to build sustainable careers —especially outside London. UK audiences need diverse, homegrown voices. That can’t happen when cuts impact programmes  and potentially narrow the range and ambition of what gets made. Charter Renewal has to ensure the BBC has secure and sustainable funding for the future.
