We’re not a substitute for a law firm, but we do try and assist members who need advice on matters connected to their engagement and work as a director.
Nine times out of ten the production company will present you with their own contract and will not ask (or read) anything you provide to them. For that reason, we don’t provide a standard director engagement contract.
You need a clause in your contract stipulating what credit you will get. If there’s no such clause, insist on one.
We’re committed to protecting and enhancing the creative, economic and contractual rights of film and television directors.
We’re seeing that more and more members are expected to start work before receiving a written contract.
In January 2020 HMRC published rules governing the taxation of freelancers in the film and TV industry.
Check your contract for working hours before you sign it. Current legislation states that you cannot work for more than 48 hours per week.
The Working Time Regulations (WTD) entitles all Workers and Employees to a legal minimum of 28 days paid leave each year (5.6 weeks – pro rata’d if you are part-time).
