Advocacy
Policy
Film and TV are great British success stories, and directors are crucial to that success.
Our voice ensures that the creative freedom of directors is protected in the laws, funding and regulations that shape the screen industries. We represent directors to policymakers, regulators and cultural leaders.
At the heart of this work is to explain how each director’s unique vision shapes the stories we see on screen. Their originality is what makes UK film and TV a vital British export — bringing significant economic and creative value. Ensuring the role of the director remains viable in the decades ahead is therefore essential to the economic and cultural future of the UK film and TV industry
Our focus is on four main policy areas that affect directors:
- Improving Freelancer Conditions
- Copyright, creator rights and AI
- Building a skilled workforce, reflective of society
- Protecting UK production
We play an active role in industry groups including the BFI Screen Sector Task Force, British Screen Forum, Creative UK, British Copyright Council and the Creators Rights Alliance to champion and frame the future of the sector
Directors UK members: you can be part of our work by supporting our activity, providing quotes and up-to-date examples of issues you are facing, or speaking on behalf of directors, please get in touch.

Our work
Improving freelancer conditions
Freelancers make up over 50% of the TV and film workforce—without them, nothing gets made.
Copyright, creator rights and AI
The rules of our industry should reward creativity.
A skilled workforce, reflective of society
The strength of the UK’s screen industries depends on who gets to tell the stories.
Protecting UK production
The UK is recognised globally as a creative powerhouse, but without support this strength risks being eroded.
